Pitch In’s Growth + Impact

Our Model

The Pitch In after-school program fosters high-quality mentoring relationships between supportive adults and our students and provides exposure to a social-emotional learning curriculum and important enrichment experiences that help ensure that students develop the mindsets, skills, and agency necessary to scale the critical transition between middle and high school successfully.

The Pitch In model leverages a strong social-emotional curriculum, a group mentoring model, exposure to unique enrichment experiences, monthly school-based Family Dinners, and 8th grade peer mentorship so that our students build the academic and leadership skills that drive success in high school and beyond. Weekly, classes of 15-20 students convene with their Pitch In families – including full-time team members and adult mentors – to build leadership skills, improve grades, build self-advocacy, and prepare for the transition to high school.

Our Impact Footprint

In the fall 2022-2023 school year, we will directly serve nearly 250 students and another 2,000 indirectly across Chicago. This includes 5th-9th graders at Lawndale Community Academy, 5th-8th graders at Richard Yates Elementary School, and 4th-7th graders at both Bernhard Moos Elementary School and Charles Sumner Math and Science Community Academy, in the North Lawndale and Humboldt Park communities.

During Summer 2022, Pitch In partnered with Code Create and Flying Classroom in order to create unique lessons that exposed our students to the importance of art in technology as they worked to design their own apps and sneakers. One of our students favorite experiences was the STEM and physics lessons that took place at local iFly, indoor skydiving, in Lincoln Park. We are grateful to all of our partners who continue to expose our students to new experiences and learning opportunities.

Looking ahead, we are charting an inspiring, strategic path toward serving two more Chicago school communities this fall. We will continue to serve the North Lawndale and Humboldt Park neighborhoods, and aspire to grow to Austin, Englewood, and Roseland in the years ahead.
